Uneven cable tension usually points to a problem elsewhere in the garage door system, not just the cable itself. One of the most common causes is an off-balance door. If the door is not sitting level, one cable can end up carrying more of the load while the other side appears loose, wears faster, or begins to fray.

Another possible cause is a broken or weakening spring. When one spring is no longer providing the same amount of tension as the other, the matching cable can lose tension and start to sag. Drum misalignment or a cable slipping out of position on the drum can also create visible slack on one side. In some cases, the cable itself may simply be worn or stretched from age and use.

This is not a repair homeowners should try to adjust on their own. Cables, drums, and springs all work together under tension, and making the wrong adjustment can cause the cable to snap, the drum to shift, or the door to drop unexpectedly. What may look like a small issue can turn into a serious safety hazard very quickly.

If one cable looks loose, it is best to have the door inspected before continuing to run it. A loose cable can come off the drum, cause the door to jam, or allow the door to move unevenly and create additional damage.
